What is Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome

Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome is a disease where your stomach produces high amounts of hydrochloric acid in response to the enzyme gastrin of the stomach. It could be due to a tumor growth in your body, either in the stomach or the pancreas. The tumor secretes the enzyme gastrin at an uncontrolled rate.

The high acidity of the stomach results in peptic ulcer formation. It causes people pain and many times diarrhea. Vomiting blood, difficulty in eating and steatorrhea can also result because of this disease.

The tumor formation in stomach or pancreas could be a result of another condition known as Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type I (MEN I). People with MEN I syndrome also suffer with other tumors at other locations in the body for example parathyroid glands or pituitary glands.

Usually proton pump blockers like Omeprazole or H2-receptor blockers like Ranitidine are given to lower the acidity of the stomach. The resection of tumors is performed and chemotherapy is conducted.

How to Find Out which Skin Laser Treatment is Right for You

There are many kinds of skin laser treatments out there. These treatments can be very expensive based on the nature of your skin condition and the treatment required.

A good idea in deciding whether the laser treatment is right for you or not is to consult with a laser plastic surgeon. The plastic surgeon will analyze your skin and will decide if it can tolerate the laser treatment and how much of the laser should be used for your particular skin condition.

There are different kinds of lasers each designed to accomplish a different kind of result from its application. The lasers used to treat wrinkles on your face peel your skin to soften the areas of wrinkles around your face. They stimulate the production of new collagen which is essential in new skin formation.

The laser treatments for skin are usually performed with a low intensity laser beam. It guarantees minimum damage to your skin with maximum results in the future. More than one laser treatment may be required for your skin due to constant gradual stimulation required for the skin enhancement.

A more aggressive laser might be used for treatments of the skin elsewhere in the body. Again your surgeon can decide if certain part of your body or skin around it can take the intensity of the laser.

Teach and learn medical terminology using cartoons and mnemonics

Teaching medical terminology using cartoons is a great way to ingrain the term in your brain. Many people including nurses and doctors learn the terminology using funny and interesting cartoons or mnemonics. As we know a picture speaks a thousand words, it is best to picture a cartoon or figure that you can remember when recalling a certain word from your medical vocabulary.

Think of all the cartoons you have watched as a child. Try to relate certain characteristics of a cartoon to any kind of disease you can think of. For example, an obese cartoon character can be related to Conn's disease (Hyperaldosteronism), Diabetes (Hyperglycemia) or Cushing's syndrome (Hyperadrenocorticism).

Giving the cartoon a story or connecting the character with a certain incident, helps out to remember further details about your medical term related to that character. For example, you can imagine your character eating lots of sugar and increasing in weight day by day, achieving hyperglycemia.

Further defining the act of your cartoon would give you more clues about the medical terminology you would like to remember about a particular disease or syndrome. For example, to remember Hyperglycemia you can come up with a cartoon character who is always very high on sugar and likes to drink lots of sugar in a glass to mess up his blood sugar. Now you have accounted for high (Hyper), sugar (-glyc-) as glass (glass can work here as a mnemonic to help you remember -glyc-) and blood (-emia) in your story. It will help you remember that this character is Hyperglycemic who uses sugar and glass to get there.

Now you have mastered the technique yourself, it is time to teach others. Using the ideas mentioned above, you can explain by drawing cartoons how to remember certain terms.

One traditional way of teaching the terminology is drawing a certain body part or system and labelling it. Each body system should be drawn separately to not to be confused with the other body system. Coloring the system with a particular color would help remember the system.

Adding prefixes and suffixes would further define the term. Certain prefixes and suffixes should be memorized from the tables and charts in the text books so you can use them to define your terminology. Coloring the suffixes and prefixes with different color markers would also help in remembering the terminology related to a certain body part in the system.

To further explain the pathology of a system or the organ related to that particular system, you can draw two cartoons of the organ. One would be a normal looking organ and the other with the disease. The diseased form of the organ could be drawn with any distortion depending on the type and kind of the disease based on what it is doing to that organ. For example, to explain Acromegaly, which means enlargment of the extremities like hands and feet, you can draw normal hands compared to the hands with long fingers. Don't forget to label both the cartoons to remember the difference. To further classify and remember this disease you can now picture Andre the Giant, Incredible Hulk or Frankestine, who all had big hands and long fingers. Draw their pictures right next to the enlarged hand to remember this condition.

Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms

Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) are the variations in a DNA sequence in comparison to the conventional sequence of the DNA of that particular species.

Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms can fall anywhere in a genomic DNA. They can be found in the coding region, non-coding region and in between the coding and non-coding regions of DNA.

The Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms which fall in the coding region of the DNA have a great importance. Since they can make a huge difference in functioning of the particular gene falling in the coding region, they are closely observed and analyzed. For example, if a single nucleotide polymorphism changes the protein code of the gene, it will no longer make the same product of the protein. If it happens it is said that a mutation has occurred in the gene. If the mutation is severe it could result in a form of a disease. Usually cancers develop in this fashion. According to scientists at least seven SNP mutations are required in a functional gene to develop cancer.

If the mutation is not severe, it could be benign or have some affect on the behavior of the individual. For example, a human being with one type of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism mutation might not be able to tolerate a certain medication as compared to it's counterparts in the same population.

High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a silent killer. If your systolic blood pressure is higher than 139 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure is higher than 89 mmHg, then you have high blood pressure. To confirm your diagnosis your doctor has to measure your blood pressure at three different occasions. If your blood pressure comes out higher than normal as described above, you are definitely suffering from high blood pressure. The doctor can prescribe a water pill to reduce your pressure. The bad part of taking the pill is if you are on it, you will be on it for life. The best way to reduce high blood pressure is to have a lifestyle change. There are many things one can do to change their sedentary lifestyle. Exercising regularly for at least half an hour to an extent that you break your sweat should be part of your daily regimen. Eating healthy foods rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and preventing heavy foods rich in bad cholesterol is important. There is a famous saying “You are what you eat”. If you eat healthy food, it will show signs of improvement in your blood pressure. Sleeping well and performing relaxing body exercises like yoga or meditation is also very important in reducing the anxiety related to your high blood pressure.

Cut some fresh tomatoes and put them in the boiling water from the original chicken. Let them boil for five minutes or so. Now using a dispenser, you should drop some egg white in it. When it settles down in the soup, you can add some fresh corn. You can serve your soup by adding some salt, black pepper, vinegar, or soy sauce.
